How to lose 3+ lbs in a week

For many people, losing three or more pounds within a week at home without the expensive gadgets and weight loss pills is almost like taboo. But for weight loss counselor Katherine Tallmadge, RD, this is very much possible.

Through a healthy diet and a ton of exercise, you can burn 500 more calories than what you eat every day for a week. Once this happens, you should lose about one to two pounds. If you want to lose more weight, then eat less and exercise harder.

Here are quick tips on how to affordably and safely shed a few pounds.

1. Limiting starch doesn’t mean limiting fat. At first, you might lose a lot of weight because of cutting down from salt and starches. However, you are actually losing mostly fluids, not fat. "When you reduce sodium and cut starches, you reduce fluids and fluid retention, which can result in up to 5 pounds of fluid loss when you get started," says Michael Dansinger, MD, of NBC's The Biggest Loser show.

2. The trick is to go white. Once you cut down on starch, sugar, and animal fat from meat and dairy food products, Dansinger recommends you to eat more egg whites, soy products, skinless poultry breasts, fish, shellfish, nonfat dairy foods, and basically 95% lean or “white” meat

3. Keep a food journal. "Even if you write it down on a napkin and end up throwing it away, the act of writing it down is about being accountable to yourself and is a very effective tool for weight loss," says Bonnie Taub Dix, MA, RD, author of Read It Before You Eat It.

4. Think about other things than food. Learn to keep your mind and body busy. Engage in activities. This way, you can avoid the habit of eating out of boredom.

5. Eat at the right place and the right time. Remember to eat reagularly in order to avoid skipping meals. Skipping meals usually result to binge eating, which leads to gaining more calories that you can afford to lose. Another tip is to eat only from the plate. Avoid hunting for food in your fridge.
